Composing with Pure Data

Last week I was introduced to Pure Data. A visual programming language made for interactive computer music and multimedia works. We were asked to build Pure Data scene and include some physical interaction through Pduino, iPhone or webcam. Very interesting things were made through week. I built some "Pet the Cat" scene for my iPhone that works through RjDj app but it's so buggy at the moment I won't publish it. Later this year I'll have Physical Interaction course and I'll definitely continue doing some sort of stuff with Pure Data/iPhone and hopefully then even publish something.

Last weeks I've participated to software studies course and as assignment we were supposed to do little app in Processing. But for some reason I wanted to try doing some interactive piece in Quartz Composer. So after hitting my head to wall almost whole weekend I got it somehowly working. So here's the result. Little game called Red Danger.

Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 is required to run Red Danger.

iPad app plays in sync with TV program

ABC has made iPad app for My Generation TV program. The thing I find interesting here is that app takes sync from sound. So it'll work even when watching recorded version (and of course even with pirated one). Maybe it's not revolutionary but I think the approach syncing with sound is quite nice because almost every device nowadays have a microphone. So the technique is really backwards compatible.

You can find more information from ABC's My Generation Sync site.

So what kind of stuff I do for living

My fellow students have been asking what kind of stuff I do/did for living. So here's one example. It's the launch promo for 3rd season of Finnish comedy series called Ketonen & Myllyrinne (sorry only in Finnish). So in this case I've done everything. Script, editing, graphics, audio...

First three weeks in Helsinki Media Lab

It's been little bit over three weeks since I started studying in Media Lab. The Media Lab is a unit in the Department of Media, at the School of Art and Design inside new Aalto University. Yeah that's little bit complicated :) There's great talented people in Media Lab and I've been really inspired after seeing all the great stuff my fellow students have done. Now I'm trying to find my focus area where I want to specialize. I know already it got something to do with future of television, interactive cinema, realtime video manipulation etc. but let's see how things work out and what I'll find the most interesting. Anyway once again I think it's really great to be alive!

Two Particle Backgrounds for Apple Motion 4

Just spent some time learning Apple Motions particle/replicator engine. While learning I built two backgrounds (first one using particle engine and second one replicator) and thought about sharing my experiments. So here you go. Hope you find these backgrounds useful and feel free to use those as you like.

MA in New Media - I'll be a student next fall!

Yeah I know... Haven't updated in a long time but it'll change because next fall I'll be a student! At last I will get some time to get really into these things I find interesting. I just got information that I've been accepted to Media Lab Helsinki. It's a unit in the School of Art and Design of Helsinki. It's a two year program and I should graduate there as a Master of Arts in New Media. This is absolutely great and I'm really waiting next fall.
